Loretta Tofani named Goldsmith Prize finalist for "American Imports, Chinese Deaths"

Pulitzer Center grant recipient Loretta Tofani has been named one of six finalists for the 2008 Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting as a result of her series "American Imports, Chinese Deaths." This award is given annually by the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

The award "honors journalism which promotes more effective and ethical conduct of government, the making of public policy, or the practice of politics by disclosing excessive secrecy, impropriety and mismanagement, or instances of particularly commendable government performance," stated the Shorenstein Center in a recent press release.

Tofani's year-long investigation into the working conditions in Chinese factories exposed the dangers faced by employees making cheap goods bound for the U.S. market.

The award winner will be announced on March 18 and will receive $25,000.
